When making my walk cycle, I used pose to pose action by starting with 3 key frames, and then adding 4 in-between frames. Since my character's body is very similar to a stick figure, I used some basic walk cycle reference images since they translated well. I tried to use a bit of squash and stretch with the head bobbing up and down as he walks as well as with the arms and legs to make them seem more loose. In terms of secondary actions, I could add some dust particles with each step, and I think the cape flowing with each step is already a secondary action. Maybe the character could pick up an object to carry that could be added to an alternate walk cycle?
